BRIGHTER TOMORROWS

Tarja Halonen was elected for a 2nd term as President for the Republic of Finland on Sunday. With Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf in Liberia and Michele Bachelet in Chili, it now makes up for 6 women heads of state currently in exercise. Considering that 191 countries are registered at the UN, there is still some way to go but I have hopes that the world has moved one step closer to sanity.

INITIAL REPORT FROM DICK MARTY

The Swiss senator Dick Marty (appointed by the Councel of Europe to look into the CIA's secret prisons in  Europe) presented his initial report on Tuesday. Although there is no hard evidences (yet) of the existence of secret prisons in Poland, Romania or others, he believes there are proofs that a hundred persons have been abducted in Europe and sent to another country to be tortured. In his own words: "there are a number of clues pointing at a system of "outsourcing" of torture, probably with the knowledge of European governments". It is clearly too tempting for our governments to point the finger at the CIA (and quite rightly so) and pretend we knew nothing of it.

FASHION GUILLOTINE

The new Dior Spring collection was presented yesterday in Paris. This year, the devilish John Galliano went  for the French Revolution as a theme for his show: each model had the number 1789 tatooed on her neck. You have to love his sense of humour, it would be enough to make all my blue-blood ancestors turn in their graves !
