Back to our new track, Firebird. We left things a couple of weeks ago at quite an early stage: guitar 
melody and some ideas about the structure of the song. Next comes the real song backbone: drums and bass.
I generally start with the drums, moving from a fairly simple pattern and adding up more frills over time. Obviously, the first ideas are not always the right ones and things will sometimes go quite a long way before falling into place. Here are the drums in the uptempo part of the song:
Once the drums are more or less set, I then record the bass to put together the rytmic section. Same drum part as previously, this time with the bassline:
