Universal have just announced that they would make their entire music catalogue available for free at Spiral Frog as of December. They will pay themselves off through advertising revenues.
What has been presented as a landmark by the media is in fact not quite as liberal as it looks: all files will be DRM protected, won't be compatible with most mp3 players and particularly Ipod, cannot be burnt onto CD and some rumours also mention that they will expire after 6 months. And according to Coolfer here, each track can only be downloaded after viewing 90 seconds of advertising.
Could be this is a step in the right direction but with so many constraints, I have some doubts it will really have a significant impact on P2P.
