MANU CHAO IN COURRIER INTERNATIONAL: FREE TRACK FROM NEW ALBUM "LA RADIOLINA"

I'm a regular reader of Courrier International, whose latest issue includes a series of articles about the "cultural revolution" undergone by the music industry.

Special guest is Manu Chao (more on him at Manu Chao's MySpace page) and a track of his new album "La Radiolina" is available for download till Wednesday at Courrier International.

THE KING OF COOL & THE PRINCE OF GRUNGE: RECORDING COMPANIES FAVOUR LICENSING DEALS

Back in November I pointed towards 2 exemple of licensing deals led by music labels - see my post here.

• As mentioned then, Primary Wave have been looking at licensing the Nirvana catalog: following the use of 'Come as you are' in "CSI: Miami", another CBS show 'Cold case' will play nothing but Nirvana music in the background of a forthcoming episode. See detail at Pitchfork here. 
• Walking in the footstep of Dean Martin, Quincy Jones is preparing to sell himself as a multiproduct brandname, steeming from audio/video/photo material to electronic goods and shaving cream. More detail at Billboard here.

TAKE AWAY SHOWS AND FREE CONCERT: LES CONCERTS A EMPORTER DE LA BLOGOTHEQUE

Some of you may have heard already about the "Concerts a emporter" (aka the "Take away shows"), the excellent video podcast produced by the Blogotheque and filmed by Vincent Moon. It is now including close to 60 impromptu concerts in unlikley places with bands such as Divine Comedy, Arcade Fire, Tapes'n'Tapes, Grizzly Bear, the Kooks and so on.

All the videos are available here, one of the latest band to be featured is Architecture in Helsinki - here on DailyMotion.

In addition, the Blogotheque is now launching the first 'Soiree a emporter' next Monday at La fleche d'Or in Paris. Admission is free so see you there !

THE FUTURE OF MARKETING MUSIC: CLASSICAL LABELS ARE SHOWING THE WAY

I already posted several times about the fact music labels should get inspiration from the way classical music is being marketed and sold over the net - see my post from last December here.

Building on this, Newsweek has just done an interview of C. Roberts, chairman of Decca (the classical unit of Universal), here. He points out some of the grounds for the positive trend of classical music (sales growing +22% vs an overall decline of -5% in 2006 according to Nielsen): rise of new young talent such as Lang Lang, regular presence amongst iTunes top sellers, bias towards album sales rather than single, ...

ANOTHER STROKE OF PR GENIUS: PRINCE GIVES AWAY FREE COPIES OF "PLANET EARTH"

Following last week's post, it seems that close to 3 million copies of Prince's new album 'Planet Earth' were given away for free with the Mail on Sunday. According to BBC here it means that it will reach almost 40 times more listeners in the UK than its predecessor '3121' (which only sold 80,000 copies).

And obviously with 3 million free copies out in the open, it is not a surprise that the album has largely leaked on the internet - see detail here.

ANOTHER STROKE OF PR GENIUS: PRINCE GIVES AWAY FREE COPIES OF "PLANET EARTH"

Once again hats off to Prince: he is not only a musical genius but also a visionary businessman ! He has  partnered up with UK newspaper the Mail on Sunday to give away 2 million copies of his forthcoming new album "Planet Earth" - see here. This will actually take place before the album officially goes on sales. Prince has also plans to include a free copy in the price of his London shows tickets.

Obviously this is not going down extrememly well with the music industry and retailers as reported for instance by the Guardian here (Paul Quirk, co-chairman of the Entertainment Retailers Association: "the Artist formerly known as Prince should know that with behaviour like this he will soon be the Artist Formerly Available in Record Stores").

So what's in it for his Purple Highness ? Well, in addition to the obvious free publicity, he is reported to get a cool 1 m$ from the Mail on Sunday to give away his work. And this will no doubt ensure that his 21 London concerts are sold out (first few dates sold out in a matter of hours).

And here is a little treat in the spirit of Prince's marketing strategy: his new single "Guitar" !

Still, a great example independant artists should get inspired from: give away your music to build your audience and draw crowds to your concerts. And if it works for Prince ...
