FIRST SALES ESTIMATES FOR IN RAINBOWS: RADIOHEAD DOING PRETTY WELL FOR THEMSELVES

   Yet another update on Radiohead new album 'In Rainbows':

• Wired here estimate that the band made somewhere around 6-10 m$ by selling the digital downloads of 'In Rainbows'. This assumes that 1.2 m people have paied between 5-8 $ and obviously excludes the sale of the 80 $ boxset.
• TALENTfilter here reports that the album is likely to be physically released on ATO Records ... which will allow the band to round up nicely the figure above !
• Finally Stereogum have posted the front and back cover arts of 'In Rainbows' here.

WHO'S BEHIND BEONLINEB: ARCADE FIRE'S CLEVER INTERACTIVE VIDEO

Nice little bit of webdesign by the Arcade Fire: go to www.beonlineb.com (easily spotted anagram for Neon Bible) and you will be treated to an excellent interactive video-clip put together by Vincent Morisset.

Definitely worth playing around for a few minutes!

CHANGE OF TUNE FOR THE MUSIC INDUSTRY: OASIS, JAMIROQUAI & MADONNA MOVE AWAY FROM TRADITIONAL MODEL

There is no doubt: things are definitely stirring up in the world of big music ! After Radiohead, Trent Reznor from NIN, rumours had it that major UK acts such as Oasis, Jamiroquai and Madness could make their next albums available on the net under a similar pay-as-you-like scheme - see article from the Telegraph here.

And yesterday came the (expected) announcement that Madonna will leave Warner Music to partner up with concert-promotion giant Live Nation: the 10 year contract (apparently worth 120 m$ in cash and stocks) will include 3 studio albums, concerts and tour promotion and merchandising. ANOTHER BIG NAME GOING FREE AGENT: TRENT REZNOR DONE WITH RECORD LABELS

Things are definitely stirring up. Trent Reznor, the man behind Nine Inch Nails, has announced yesterday that he would become a "free agent" now that his contract with Interscope has lapsed - see details at NIN.com here and Billboard.bizz here.

"I have been under recording contracts for 18 years and have watched the business radically mutate from one thing to something inherently very different and it gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a direct relationship with the audience as I see fit and appropriate," Reznor said.

Wtach out for more major acts to go independent ...

THE KING OF COOL & THE PRINCE OF GRUNGE: RECORDING COMPANIES FAVOUR LICENSING DEALS

  I mentioned already how Courtney Love and publishing company had plans to license the Nirvana song catalog - see November post and July post. The episode of the CBS show 'Cold Case' featuring only music from Nirvana was aired a couple of weeks ago as reported not too positively by Stereogum here.
