Most marketing execs know very well the importance of getting consumers to use a product several times in order to build loyalty. Which is one of the reasons why as an independent musician, I believe you should give away your best track(s) so that pepole can download it easily, add it to their mp3 playlist and grow into it.
This is also what makes regular contacts with your audience so important (just look at the success of many TV series over the last 40 years).
One of my all-time favourite band, THE CURE, have set up a scheme along these lines. They will release a new single on the 13th of the next 4 months untill their new album (which is of course the 13th) comes out in September. More details:
