Is this quite simply the best ZEROCAST issue ever ? I like to think so myself but then again I'm probably biased since it includes killer remixes of 2 of my favourite bands, FRANZ FERDINAND and KINGS OF LEON, as well as MGMT, Peter Bjorn & John or Aninal Collective. 20/01/2009: ONE MINUTE REVIEW "SYNTHETICS"

In my line of duty, it is important to  find out about new independent producers and remixers. Which is why I'm always ready to lend an ear to a new remix and, providing it is any good, feature it on LE BLOG DU BARON. Here is the email I received fom Ben some time ago:

Dear Baron, I'm a keen follower of your blog, you've brightened my musical outlook with some great insights and downloads so thanks a million and keep it up!

I've ventured into the production side of things having been casually DJing around London for a good few years, and I've entered a track into this Radiohead Reckoner remix competition. I just been listening through your Zerocast Ultimate Radiohead Remix Competition and there's some crackers on there. I'd love you to hear my effort, it's always good to get feedback from other people who know their music and, well, if you like it perhaps you could post it on the blog? And if not, I'd love to hear what you genuinely think of it!

What do I think ? Actually I think it is absolutely excellent, one of the most atmospheric RECKONER remixes I have heard, and although I missed the deadline to vote for this remix by a long way, I promised myself to post it up. Here it is:

13/01/2009: ZEROCAST SCORES 17/20 WITH THE HYPE MACHINE

One of the sites I visit the most often is THE HYPE MACHINE, where I never cease to discover great new music (in case you haven't checked it out, just scroll down to find it in my links). HypeM have just published their MUSIC BLOG ZEITGEIST with the top 50 bands of the year according to how frequently the blogs listed (including yours truly) posted their songs.

12/01/2009: SOME THOUGHTS ON THE TAJ MAHAL ATTACKS AND MILAREPA 'S TEACHINGS

I finally finished the book I started on the night of the TAJ MAHAL terror attack, about the life of Tibet's great XIIth Century yogi master MILAREPA (details available on request for those of you interested). Strange feeling to close the book, since it has been with me all through these days in Mumbai and after back in Singapore. After close to 6 weeks and well into the new year, it might be time to cover the impact the events had on me in more details.

Has it changed the way I look at life ? Not really. I always thought that life is neither good nor bad, it just IS and we decide which side we want to see. And I don't believe there is any meaning in what happened, or in the fact I survived. Actually if there was a meaning in my escape, wouldn't it mean there is also a meaning in the fact so many people died ? That is not something I'm ready to accept.

In the end these events - like everything else which happens in our existence - will be given meaning by the way I carry on with my life from now on. But one thing which has changed is the fact I have become more conscious of my own frailty, the limited time I have at my disposal. Making me feel more present and focused on the moment at hand.

Buddhists masters such as MILAREPA teach that the first path towards enlightment is the realization of the impermanence of life. Maybe this is what happened, giving me a chance to build on this experience and learn how to become a better person. Let me wish you exactly the same for 2009 !
