22/07/2009: HOW TO GET YOUR MUSIC REVIEWED IN BLOGS

It has been close to 4 years since the start of this blog and these days I receive on average 25-30 messages every week from PR agencies, record labels, bands and DJs eager to get coverage for their remixes or original music. And although I do make a point of listening to every piece of music, some messages tend to gather dust in my mailbox. Which led to me to think about the criteria which can help musicians to get covered in LE BLOG DU BARON and blogs in general.

Here is a track that I received from COSMO BLACK a couple of weeks ago:

So why did I chose to open this email first, listen to the track and write about it ?

 

1. The name: I'd be the first to agree that you can make great music despite a lousy band name and vice versa. But Cosmo Black definitely has a nice ring to it and made me curious.
2. The remix project: as you have probably noticed by now I tend to cover essentially remix of rock/indie bands. ACE OF SPADE is definitely a legendary track and hearing MOTORHEAD get the remix treatment does sound interesting.
3. The message: unfortunately I did not keep a copy of the email itself but it was fun and engaging.
4. The track: obviously all of this would not add to much without a killer track. I think COSMO BLACK did a great job with his remix. The only areas where I think it could still be improved is the lack of a clear bassline to really drive the track and the fact that the chorus (or rather Lenny singing the ACE OD SPADE line) comes quite late in the remix. When you have such an anthemic and recognisable chorus, you want to use right at the start to grab people into the song. But on the whole, a good work.
