14/09/2009: ONE MINUTE REVIEW "ETC @ CRAWLSPACE"

After more than a year in Singapore I'm proud to report that I finally managed to attend a concert from local indie legend ETC. And if I have one thing to say: it was well worth the wait.

Even tough I have always enjoyed the studio demos, it is really a band that has to be experienced live. Ben on guitars, Harvey on drums and a loop box in the middle, these 2 still manage to rock the house down. The guitar/drums format allows Ben to create an always changing canvas of melodies while Harvey hidden in the back keeps the energy level impressively high (and would be well worth the show on his own).

This is raw, sometimes chaotic, often surprising (few people would dare throw in some verse of Killy Minogue, Michael Jackson and Joy Division in the middle of the same song) and it's amazing that despite all this they manage to keep things tight and punchy. Big bonus point for my personal favourite PETER PANIC.

12/07/2009: NOT ANOTHER TRIBUTE TO MICHAEL JACKSON

Untill now I restrained from posting about the death of Michael Jackson. Many people (too many) have talked at length about his career, his persona and the impact he had on music history with better words than mine. But last week I stumble upon on the MJ Memorial Concert (showing how difficult it is to avoid him on TV these days). 

Obviously you can only respect the pain his death represents for his friends and family but what was that about ? And the idea of having a coffin right in front of the stage was pretty bad taste to say the least ...

As I watched the last 20 minutes of the show I kept asking myself "when did Michae Jackson stopped being relevant to me ?" Sure, the man had some amazing moves and like it or not THRILLER was one of the highlights of the 80s (quite largely down to Quincy Jones production imho) but did he come up with anything really significant after SMOOTH CRIMINAL ?

Anyway, I rummaged through the remix vault in search of some MJ remixes to post for the occasion. Here is how I prefer to remember him: as the coolest kid in the JACKSON 5 and the grooviest black man on earth at the time of OFF THE WALL. And as an extra, an incredible mashup of his (quite disappointing) duet with Janet by Team 9.

31/10/2008: NEW "WHIMSICAL MIXTAPE" FROM MOJIB

If you have checked out the ULTIMATE RADIOHEAD REMIX COMPILATION (and if you haven't it is just one click away), you probably listened to the superb remix of "Videotape" by MOJIB. Well, his record company has been nice enough to send me the link to his new WHIMSICAL MIXTAPE.

After last years critically acclaimed debut, "Whimsical Lifestyle", Mojib returns to complete the circle with a special take on the album.

It's a mixtape that knows no boundaries as it remixes, mashes and reconstructs tracks from the LP while adding artists that inspired the album. Maintaining the mixture of styles from his debut album, Mojib takes the original samples one step further and let new styles blend with old. It's two separate mix sessions loaded with a strong passion and dedication for music. The first part features a fast tempo and an upbeat style, similar to his past mixes ("Examination mix" and "Holiday adventure"). Underground and well-known commercial artists blend together with tracks such as "Whimsical lifestyle", "Jonsered" and "Break of dawn".

The second part lets the listener on a darker journey, following the footsteps of past projects such as "Requeim" with Martin Erlandsson. This piece incorporates the more downtempo tracks from the album such as "Untitled" and "Underneath". As a bonus it also features the upcoming release of Mojibs take on Radioheads "Paranoid android" (set to be released through Buffet Libres Rewind 2 project in January).

15/04/2008: ANNOUNCING THE ULTIMATE RADIOHEAD REMIX COMPILATION

COMING SOON I will post in a few days a Zerocast special: the ultimate RADIOHEAD remix compilation. 30 tracks re-invented  by the best remixers, spanning the entire carreer of Radiohead from Pablo Honey to the most creative entries of the recent Nude remix contest.

06/03/2008: HAVING THE COURAGE OF YOUR OPINIONS

I have to hand it down to Bjork: although I have not always been entirely convinced by some of her work, she has the courage of her opinions and does not give up on them for anyone, including the Chinese government. In a recent concert in Shangai, she has dedicated her song "Declare independance" to Tibet as she has done in the past in other places for Kosovo, etc ...

She also put this ip on her website here: "i have been asked by many for a statement after dedicating my song  "declare independence"  to both kosovo and tibet ( amongst others ) on different  occasions.

i would like to put importance on that i am not a politician, i am first and last a musician and as such i feel my duty to try to express the whole range of human emotions. the urge for declaring independence is just one of them but an important one that we all feel at some times in our lives. this song was written more with the personal in mind but the fact that it has translated to its  broadest meaning, the struggle of a suppressed nation, gives me much pleasure . 

i would like to wish all individuals and nations good luck in their battle for independence.

LE BARON GONE CRAZY: SEE YOU ALL IN THE NEW YEAR

Hi everyone, I'm having a short break from blogging since: 1/ I'm busy rehearsing for next year's World Tour, 2/ the goose is getting fat and 3/ I'm feeling kinda lazy anyway ...

A FEW WEEKS LATER: PRINCE, P DIDDY AND RADIOHEAD STILL THE TALK OF TOWN

Away for close to a month and it really does seem that nothing has changed in the news:

• Radiohead are still the talk of the town, whether they are reacting to Comscore evaluation of the actual digital sales of 'In Rainbows', being dissed by Lilly Allen or giving an impromptu web gig from the studio (which I missed being between 2 planes but I can't wait to see resurface on YouTube);
• Prince is still unleashing his purple wrath onto some of his fans, although this time he does it in a seriously funky way;
• Rap moghuls are still busy promoting high end alcohol, this time P Diddy tying up with Diageo to introduce a new Vodka brand;
• And of course, Paris is still half paralysed due to yet another strike within public transport.
